What is a Water Heater Tune-Up?

A hot water heater tune-up is a simple process where a professional technician will do a general inspection of your water heater to check if all of the components are working as they should be and make any necessary tweaks or repairs that your unit may need. It typically involves inspecting and servicing the primary components of the heater, including the thermostat, the burner, and the pressure relief valve.

Thorough and routine tune-ups can help technicians catch minor issues before they progress into serious breaks, and they can give you a look into the overall health and status of your unit.

Key Components Checked During a Tune-Up

The primary components of your water heater that are inspected during a tune-up include the following.

  • Thermostat: The thermostat on your water heater checks the overall temperature of both the water in the heater and the heater itself, preventing overheating and regulating the temperature of the unit.
  • Burner: The burner is what heats the water in your unit, and if it is not functioning properly your water could get overheated or underheated, causing potential issues.
  • Pressure Relief Valve: Pressure can build up in the heater as it does its job, and the relief valve is meant to safely release that pressure to prevent serious complications.
  • Anode Rod: An anode rod runs through your water heater unit and prevents the tank itself from rusting or corroding by attracting corrosion to itself.
  • Sediment Levels: The sediment levels within your water heater are also measured during a tune-up. These minerals naturally occur in your water and can build up as a layer in your heater, negatively impacting the efficiency of your unit.

Frequency of Tune-Ups

How often should you get a water heater tune-up? We recommend scheduling these appointments around once a year. Annual tune-ups and maintenance can help to prevent unexpected breakdowns by catching potential issues early on and addressing them before they become larger and more expensive problems.

Benefits of Regular Water Heater Maintenance

While the water heater tune-up costs may deter you at first, the short-term and long-term benefits of routine maintenance can make it all worthwhile. Not only can it help to save you money on your energy bills each month, but it can also improve the lifespan of your unit and save you from costly repairs later down the line.

Increased Energy Efficiency

A well-maintained and fully functioning water heater can heat your water more efficiently, which uses less energy long-term. While this improved energy efficiency puts less stress on your unit, it can also save you money on your utility bills each month. Your unit needs less energy to heat your water properly, decreasing your utility bills gradually over time. These savings add up in the long run, making the tune-ups essentially pay for themselves.

Prolonged Lifespan

Regular maintenance and tune-ups on your water heater can also prevent unnecessary wear and tear on your unit. These preventative measures can extend the lifespan of your unit and help delay the need for costly repairs or replacements.

The Water Heater Tune-Up Process

What does a tune-up actually entail for you as a homeowner? The basic steps involved in the water heater tune-up process include initially inspecting and diagnosing any potential issues, flushing the tank, testing the thermostat and pressure valves, and a final system check.

  • Inspection and Diagnosis

  • The step in the tune-up process is to do a general inspection of your unit. A technician will look at the overall condition of your unit and check for any potential issues that may need attention. Whether or not any issues are found, the technician will still go through the steps to tune up your unit and make sure it is working properly.

  • Flushing the Tank

  • After the general inspection, our technicians at Semper Fi Heating & Cooling will flush your water heater tank and refill it. While this step may seem pointless at first, we promise it serves a very important purpose. Flushing your water heater tank can remove any sediment buildup within the tank, which if not addressed can reduce the efficiency of your unit and lead to rust and corrosion over time.
  • Thermostat and Pressure Valve Testing

  • After flushing your water heater’s tank, we will then check that the thermostat and pressure valves are working as they should. Our technicians will calibrate the thermostat to make sure it is giving an accurate reading of the temperature inside the unit, and they will test the pressure valve to make sure that it is operating properly and safely.
  • Final System Check

  • Once all of this is said and done, our technician will do one last check-up on your water heater unit. We will test your unit to make sure all of the components are working properly and efficiently. This is also one last check to make sure there are no potential issues with your unit before we head out.

Signs Your Water Heater Needs a Tune-Up

Common signs that your water heater may need a tune-up include inconsistent water temperatures, strange noises coming from the tank, and visible rust or corrosion.

Inconsistent Water Temperature

If the temperature of the water coming from your faucets or shower head is inconsistent, it could be a sign of something wrong with your heater’s thermostat or even the burner.

Strange Noises From the Tank

Water heaters should be overall quiet with a few soft noises here and there. If you start to hear loud bangs or clunks coming from your water heater, it may be time to schedule a tune-up.

Visible Rust or Corrosion

Rust or corrosion to any part of your unit can lead to serious breakdowns if not addressed properly. If you see rust, do not wait to get your unit looked at by a professional at Semper Fi.
